Japan’s winter landscape if far removed from Australia. Siberian winds traverse the Sea of Japan, creating a “wind of white flowers” (kazahana). All sound is muffled, it is eerily silent. The countryside seems uncharacteristically devoid of cars and people. The absence of humanity is an illusion however. For this region, known as the belly button of Japan, life has merely turned inwards. When the snow melts, the famed lavender fields will will grow again.

Exhibited at the Ballarat Bienale 2021. Postcards available.
