This work presents a man made world devoid of people and external context. The urban environment is presented as entirely separate from the natural. We all have a diverse experience of the place we call home. The dream of a house in suburbia is giving way to a very different built environment. In Australia, the number of detached homes was only overtaken by attached dwellings in 2015. It remains to be seen how this will impact on the traditional Australian psyche - societies create their most grand monuments to what holds the highest value for them.

This minimalist series is pared down to simple graphics, an anecdote to the day to day realities of life at ground level. Looking up provides a salve to the alienation of the inner city but reinforces the alienation of those who dwell within.

“These images are meant as metaphors to the dilemma of our modern existence; they search for a dialogue between attraction and repulsion, seduction and fear. We are drawn by desire – a chance at good living, yet we are consciously or unconsciously aware that the world is suffering for our success. Our dependence on nature to provide the materials for our consumption and our concern for the health of our planet sets us into an uneasy contradiction. For me, these images function as reflecting pools of our times.” – Edward Burtynsky
